Lao Heritage Foundation marks 11 years

The Lao Heritage Foundation is holding their 11th annual cultural Gala on September 26 at Herndon Community Center in Herndon, Virginia. The evening starts at 7pm and tickets are $35 for most people at the door.Participants will have a chance to enjoy delicious traditional Lao cuisine, and traditional music and dance performed by the students of the Lao Heritage Foundation. A community dance will follow with music provided by the Woodbridge Band. There will be items for auction and raffles to raise funds to sustain and expand the cultural programs of the Lao Heritage Foundation. ¬†Several Lao American authors will be in attendance who will sign their books for audience members. This year is a significant year for the Lao community as it marks 40 years since the beginning of the modern Lao diaspora. Over 230,000 Lao are rebuilding their lives across the US in all walks of life with many who hope to maintain the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Laos. Lao heritage and the emerging generation of culture-builders

I remembered Lao School like it was yesterday. Getting frustrated at how my stiff little fingers never bent gracefully during ‘fawning’.¬†Crushing packages of Mama instant noodles for lunch and eating it like chips with my friends during class. Passing time with Lao ‘then yang’ (jump rope game) and always feeling too short to jump high enough. Lao heritage was part of my life growing up. I wanted to fit in being American so badly that I forgot how much I missed paying attention to my elders as a child. Now, I remember more than ever. With every stroke of the Lao alphabet, every turn of my feet on the dance floor, and the intricate textile draped across my shoulders, I felt my grandmother’s aura. Smiling over me in pride. I think of how graceful she must have been as a child. And maybe how much her elders must have scorned her too. My favorite summer memories were created at the Lao Assistance Center of MN, where we lived in the Harrison neighborhood of Northside Minneapolis. …
