Coming to Minnesota: Laotian American National Alliance (LANA)

The Laotian American National Alliance (LANA) is hosting its third national conference here in the Twin Cities and you’re all invited! This year’s theme is “Leaders: Building the Future” and will focus on issues such as leadership and the community, youth and activism, advocacy and national development, education, employment, immigration and deportation, and language preservation. A viewing of the documentary Sentenced Home will be shown as well (Friday, Aug. 17 @ 2:45pm-4:30pm). The conference will take place August 17 & 18, 2012.

The organization LANA came out of a 1997 conference by the National Association for Education and Advancement of Cambodians, Laotians, and Vietnamese (NAFEA) and was launched in 1999 in Berkeley, California. They are now based in Washington, D.C. and is the oldest and only Laotian American national non-profit advocacy, non-partisan, and non-religious organization in the U.S. advocating for social justice and economic well-being, health equity, civic and civil rights, and public education amongst many other endeavors.

Why attend the conference? If you are interested in community work, you should attend this conference. If you are interested in issues such as education, leadership, immigration, health access, and employment, you should attend this conference. Registration for the conference is open to anyone and is $30 per person, with special discounts as applicable ($10 for students, $20 for seniors). Please contact me, Danny, at dkhotsombath@gmail.com if you are interested in going (LANA website is not updated yet).
